Ever roll through a stop sign on your 25lb bicycle at 5mph when no one was around? You're an outlaw and the fines are high.
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance has proposed a new law that helps turn outlaws (us included) into law abiding citizens. The new law (known as the "Idaho Stop Law" as it was first passed in the potato state). They site many major reasons to support this new law which would benefit current riders as well as be a notable factor in increasing ridership. From lessening the demand on police enforcement, to easing traffic flow, to 'being real' with laws that are so broadly disregarded (ever speed 5mph over the limit?), it's the right move for so many reasons. But the reason that entertains me the most about the whole thing is how it would relieve parents from having to say to their children, 'Well, sometimes it's ok to bend the law.'
Read the concise FAQ to learn why this is such a great move for the city of Portland.
